Colour and Tone Corrections of Digitized Colour Pictures

Abstract

Masking as a method of obtaining improved reproduction of colour and tone has been studied extensively, based on photographic and on analogue- or digital scanner processing systems. However, relatively little has been published on digital masking processes, and the practice involved in commercial digital scanners leaves much to be desired.

In the present paper, the principle of a novel approach to digital masking is introduced which, in particular, allows a long-scale black printer to be prepared, ensuring stable neutral tones to be produced in printing at all density levels. Experiments are based on the digital scanning and exposing equipment Photomation P 1700 and demonstrate good control over both colour and tone, taking the shape of the characteristic curve of the recording film into account.

Résumé

On a étudié d’une manière approfondie le masquage en tant que méthode pour obtenir un rendu amélioré des couleurs et des valeurs basée sur des systèmes photographiques et des analyses par balayage analogique ou numérique. Cependant, peu d’informations ont été publiées sur les procédés numériques de masquage et les techniques utilisées dans les équipements commerciaux laissent beaucoup à désirer.

Le présent article décrit une nouvelle approche de masquage numérique permettant de préparer un cliché du noir à grande latitude assurant des valeurs neutres stables lors de l’impression pour chaque niveau de densité.

Desexpériences faites avec l’équipement de prise de vue et de balayage numérique Photomation P 1700 témoignent d’un bon contrôle des couleurs et des valeurs, tenant compte de la forme caractéristique du film d’enregistrement.

Riassunto

L’uso della maschera come metodo per ottenere migliori riproduzioni del colore e deltono è stato largamente studiato vuoi con sistemi fotografici che con sistemi a scansione sia analogici che digitali. Tuttavia, è stato pubblicato relativamente poco sui procedimenti di maschera digitali e l’esperienza acquisita con gli apparecchi digitali commerciali lascia molto a desiderare.

Nel presente lavoro viene introdotto il principio di nuova impostazione del processo di maschera digitale che permette, in particolare, di realizzare uno stampatore nero a lunga scala capace di fornire in stampa toni neutri stabili a tutti i livelli di densità.

Le esperienze sono fatte con l’apparecchio di esposizione a scansione digitale Photomation P 1700 e dimostrano un buon controllo sia del colore che del tono, tenendo conto della forma della curva caratteristica del film registratore.
