Abstract
The widely discordant values of the electron affinity of adsorbed dye films found by laboratory measurement, and by calculation, have been reconciled using the statistical character of the binding energy of an electron associated with an adsorbed molecule. The experimental electron affinity is identified as that of a molecule at the physical cut-off point of the distribution due to finite molecular size. An extension of the model to include frozen-in thermal defects makes it possible to estimate the density of adsorbed molecules having electron affinities greater than the experimentally measured value.
