Determination of Quantum Sensitivities

Abstract

The determination, from data on the fraction of grains in an emulsion which develop after various exposures, of the number of quanta which must be absorbed by a silver halide grain in order for it to be rendered developable is a mathematically illposed problem. Recognition of this fact is the key to the formulation of algorithms which produce stable estimates ofquantum sensitivity distributions. In this paper, we present a method by means of which sensitivity distributions are calculated with as much precision as the precision in the experimental data will permit.

Résumé

La détermination du nombre de quantums qui doivent être absorbés par un grain d’halogénure d’argent pour être rendu développable d’après l’influence de l’exposition sur la proportion des grains développés est un problème mathématiquement mal posé. Reconnaître ce fait est la clé de la formulation des algorithmes qui fournissent une évaluation valable de la distribution de la sensibilité quantique. Nous présentons dans ce mémoire une méthode qui rend compte de la distribution de la sensibilité avec toute la précision que permet la précision des résultats expérimentaux.

Zusammenfassung

Bei einer fotografischen Emulsion ist die Bestimmung der (Entwicklungs-) Schwellenverteilung aus dem Anteil der AgHal-Körner, die nach verschiedenen Belichtungen entwickelbar werden, ein mathematisch diffiziles Problem. In der vorliegenden Arbeit wird eine Methode angegeben, mit der diese Schwellenverteilung (Empfindlichkeitsverteilung) mit der Genauigkeit berechnet werden kann, welche die experimentellen Daten zulassen.

Riassunto

La determinazione, dai dati sulla frazione di granuli di un’emulsione che sviluppano dopo esposizioni diverse, del numero di quanti che debbono essere assorbiti da un granulo di alogenuro d’argento per renderlo sviluppabile è un problema matematicamente male impostato. Il riconoscimento di questo fatto è la chiave per la formulazine degli algoritmi capaci di fornire precise stime delle distribuzioni della sensibilità quantica.

In questo lavoro presentiamo un metodo col quale è possibile calcolare le distribuzioni di sensibilità con la stessa precisione che la precisione dei dati sperimentali permette.
