Abstract

Ethyl cinnamate, the monomer analogue of polyvinyl cinnamate, has been used as the model compound in the study. of the crosslinking mechanism in the photopolymer. Analysis of the products of ultra-violet lrradeation of ethyl cinnamate has been carried out by proton n.m.r., gas chromatography and combined gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Dimerization of ethhyl cinnamate has been shown to occur with the preferential formation of some of the 11 possIble isomeric structures of dimer. The distribution of isomers has been shown to be dependent on the irradiation conditions.
