A Review of the Principles and Performances of Photochemical Imaging Processes

Abstract

Although main photochemical imaging processes, other than silver halides, have been proposed, none has. so far. achieved the necessary sensitivity, shelf-life and spectral sensitivity required for general camera recording. The approaches to photochemical imaging processes and then performances are considered m relation to silver halide processes, together with a discussion of their limitations. Particular emphasis is placed on those systems that have attempted to mimic silver halides in processing post-exposure amplification.

Bien que de nombreux procédés photochimiques, autres que les halogénures d’argent, aient été proposés pour obtenir des images, aucun n’a atteint, jusqu’à maintenant, la sensibilité, la stabilité le rendu spectral exigés pour la prise de vue avec un apparei photographique. Les procédés photochimiques essayés pour obtenir des images et leurs performances sont comparés aux procédés aux halogénures d’argent et leurs limites sont discutées. On insiste tout particulièrement sur les systèmes qui, comme les halogénures d’argent mettent en oeuvre une amplification après l’exposition.

Zusammenfassung

Obgleich ausser dem Silberhalogenidverfahren viele andere fotochemische Bildaufzeichnungsverfahren bekannt sind, gibt es unter den anderen Verfahren bis heute keines, welches hinsichtlich Empfindlichkeit, Lagerhaltbarkeit und Spektralempfindlichkeit die Anforderungen für ein Kameraaufzeichnungsmaterial erfüllt. Verschiedene Verfahren werden in Bezug zum Silberhalogenidverfahren gesetzt, dabei werden Leistungsfähigkeit und Grenzen diskutiert. Insbesondere werden Systeme betrachtet, die wie das Silberhalogenidverfahren einen nach der Belichtung wirksamen Verstärkungsfaktor besitzen.

Sebbene siano stati proposti molti processi fotochimici per la formazione di immagini, diversi dagli alogenuri di argento, nessuno ha, finora, raggiunto la sensibilità, la stabilità e la sensibilità spettrale che si richiedono normalmente in fotografia.

Vengono considerati gli approcci con processi fotochimici formatori di immagine e le loro capacità in confronto coi processi ad alogenuro d’argento e se ne discute le loro limitazioni.

Particolare enfasi viene data a quei sistemi che hanno la possibilità di imitare l’argento in quanto presentano una amplificazione dopo l’esposizione.
