A Photographic Process Based on Crystallization Induced by Photochemical Reaction

Abstract

The phenomenon of dark crystallization in preliminary light irradiated small particles of cis-diarylethylenes has been found and studied. The phenomenon was shown to be due to crystallization initiated by photochemically formed trans-molecules acting as nuclealion centres.

It is proposed to utilize this phenomenon in an information storage process which is comprised of two stages: 111 the formation of the latent image in the course of photochemical cis-trans-isomerizalion; (ii) the dark intensification process due to crystallization with trans-molecules as nuclealion centres. The photosensitive layer studied comprises small particles of photosensitive substance uniformly distributed in thin polymer film. The intensification of the latent image is impossible due to the shift of the phase transition point upon formation of even small quantities of trans-molecules. The threshold sensitivity of the material experimentally was found to be 105cm2/J, The material is expected to have the parameters of silver halide pholomalerials in perspective.

Résumé

On a observé que les petites particules de cis-diaryléthylène, préalablement exposées à la lumière, cristallisent à l’obscurité. Le phénomène a été étudié et on a montré qu’il était dü à la cristallisation initiée par les molécules trans formées photochimiquement et agissant comme centres de nucléation.

On propose d’utiliser ce phénomène pour le stockage des informations par un procédé en deux temps: (i) formation de l’image latente par57:772 isomérisation photochimique cis-trans, (ii) intensification à l’obscurité par la cristallisation induite par les molécules trans qui agissent comme germes de nucléation. La couche sensible étudiée est constituée par de petites particules de la substance photosensible uniformément dispersées dans un film mince de polymère. L’intensification de l’image latente est rendue possible par le déplacement du point de transition provoqué par la formation des molécules trans, même en petitie quantité. Le seuil de sensibilité du produit expérimental est de 105cm2/J. On pense que ce produit atteindra les performances des surfaces photographiques aux halogénures d’argent.

Zusammenfassung

Das Phänomen der “DunkelKristallisation” in zuvor mit Licht bestrahlten kleinen Teilchen von cisDiarylethylenen wurde entdeckt und näher untersucht. Der Effekt wird dadurch erklärt, dass fotochemisch gebildete trans-Moleküle als Kirstallisationskeime wirken.

Es wird vorgeschlagen, diesen Effekt in Informations-AufzeichnungsProzessen zu verwenden, die in zwei Stufen ablaufen würden: (i) Bildung eines Latentbildes durch fotochemische cis-trans-Isomerisation, (ii) Verstärkung durch Dunkel-Kristallisation mit den trans-Molekülen als Kristallisationskeimen. Das untersuchte lichtempfindliche System bestand aus kleinen Teilchen der lichtempfindlichen Phase, die in einem Polymer-film statistisch verteilt waren. Die Verstärkung des Latentbildes wird möglich durch eine Verschiebung des Phasenübergangspunktes die bereits bie der Bildung geringer Mengen von trans-Molekülen auftritt. Die Empfindlichkeitsschwelle des experimentellen Materials liegt bei einer Belichtung von 105cm2/J damit konnte man von diesem System eine dem Silberhalogenidsystem vergleichbare Empfindlchkeit erwarten.

Riassunto

E’ stato trovato e studiato il fenomeno della cristallizzazione al buio di piccole particelle, precedentemente illuminate, di cis-diariletileni.

Si dimostra che il fenomeno è dovuto alla cristallizzazione iniziata da trans-molecole formate fotochimicamente ed agenti come centri di nucleazione. Viene proposto di utilizzare questo fenomeno in un processo di immagazzinamento di informazioni che comprende due stadi: (i) la formazione dell’immagine latente nel corso della cis-transisomerizzazione fotochimica, (ii) un processo di intensificazione al buio dovuto alla cristallizzazione con le trans-molecole agenti come centri di nucleazione. Gli strati fotosensibili studiati sono costituiti da piccole particelle di sostanza fotosensibile distribuita uniformemente in un film polimerico. L’intensificazione dell’immagine latent è resa possibile dallo spostamento del punto di transizione di fase prodotto dalla formazione di trans-molecole, anche in piccole quantità. La soglia di sensibilità del materiale risulta, sperimentalmente, di 105cm2/J. Si prevede che il materiale raggiunga in futuro i parametri dei materiali fotosensibili ad alogenuro d’argento.
