Selective Latent Image Distribution in Silver HalidesFootnote

Abstract

A photographic system of two evaporated layers of silver halides is investigated. It consists of a thicker silver bromide or silver bromoiodide polycrystalline basic layer on top of which a very thin film of silver chloride is deposited. The dependence of the sensitivity on the thickness of the two layers is followed. The thermal annealing of the basic silver bromide increases considerably the photoresponse of the system.

It is suggested that the electrons generated randomly in the basic silver bromide or silve bromoiodide layer are injected into the thin silver chloride. The latent image distribution revealed by differential development supports this assumption.

Résumé

Elude d’un système photographique comportant deux couches d’halogénure d’argent déposées par évaporation. La couche inférieure, la plus épaisse, est constituée de bromure ou de bromoiodure d’argent polycristallin. Sur cette couche est déposé un film très mince de chlorure d’argent. La relation entre la sensibilité et l’épaisseur des deux couches est déterminée. Le recuit thermique du bromure d argent de base augmente considérablement la photoréponse du système.

On suppose que les électrons libérés au hasard dans la couche de base de bromure ou de bromoiodure d’argent sont injectés dans la couche fine de chlorure d’argent. La répartition de l’image latente, telle qu’elle est révélée par un développement différentiel, appuie cette hypothèse.

Zusammenfassung

Ein fotografisches System bestehend aus zwei Aufdampfschichten-einer dicken, polykristallinen AgBr- oder AgBrJ-Schicht und einer sehr dünnen AgCl-Schicht-wurde untersucht. Die Abhängigkeit der Empfindlichkeit von der Dicke der beiden Teilschichten wurde verfolgt. Durch Tempern der Basis-AgBr-Schicht konnte die Empfindlichkeit des Systems beträchtlich gesteigert werden.

Es wird angenommen, dass bei Belichtung die in der AgBr-bzw. AgBrJ-Schicht erzeugten Elektronen in die AgCl-Schicht injiziert werden. Die durch differentielle Entwicklung gefundene Latent-bildver- teilung stützt diese Hypothese.

Riassunto

E’ stato studiato un sistema fotografico con due strati di alogenuri d’argento evaporati. Esso consiste di uno strato di base di maggior spessore contenente bromuro o bromojoduro d’argento policristallino sul quale viene depositato un film molto sottile di cloruro d’argento. E’ stata studiata la dipendenza della sensibilità dallo spessore dei due strati. Una tempra termica del bromuro d’argento di base aumenta considerevolmente la risposta fotografica del sistema. Si pensa che gli elettroni generati casualmente nello strato base di bromuro o bromojoduro d’argento vengano iniettati nel sottile strato di cloruro d’argento.

Questa ipotesi viene confermata dalla distribuzione deH’immagine latente rilevata con sviluppo differenziale.
