Abstract
Heterocyclic compounds which form insoluble silver salts are commonly used in photographic developers to control the growth of fog density. Using a model film/developer system it has been found that some of these compounds can in addition discriminate between areas of low and high exposure with the result that high contrast similar to that obtained from lith development is achieved. This offers the potential to obtain high contrast development from a stable high-sulphite developer. The mechanism has been investigated by using sensitometric and electrochemical techniques. The results for two typical compounds, 5-methylbenzotriazole and 5-nitroindazole. are presented and discussed.
