Density-Related Acutance

Pages 225-226 | Received 19 Mar 1984, Published online: 21 Jul 2016

Abstract

Acutance has been expressed as the mean-squared density gradient of an edge profile (x), averaged in the space domain. By change of variable, integration can equivalently be performed in the density domain, using the first derivative of the inverse density profile x(D). In the latter form, acutance follows directly from a density-dependent plot of the line-spread function, which is bounded by a lower density limit D, set by a threshold gradient.
