Noise Analysis in Analogue Granularity Measurements

ABSTRACT

A method will be described of estimating the standard error in analogue measurements of RMS granularity. The method is based on a calculation of the effective bandwidth of the measuring system, including both optical and electronic contributions, and sampling theory. For a particular instrument, it is shown that the effective number of density readings associated with this bandwidth is roughly equal to the maximum possible number of independent readings, indicating that system noise and standard error are minimised.
