Signal-to-Noise Considerations in Analogue Granularity Measurement

Pages 154-158 | Received 26 Apr 1985, Published online: 16 Nov 2018

ABSTRACT

A method of measuring film granularity will be described in which the transmitted light from a circularly-scanning spot is detected by a photomultiplier operating with constant average anode current. An expression for the signal-to-noise ratio will be derived and methods for improving it will be discussed. In particular, detailed consideration will be given to the effects of electrical measurement bandwidth on signal, noise and statistical error.
