Abstract

The addition of silver halide solvents, such as potassium thiocyanate (KSCN) and ammonium thiosulphate ((NH4)2S2O3), to photographic developers results generally in an improvement of the modulation transfer function (M.T.F.). In this paper we have performed a number of experiments in an attempt to improve the results of Agfa Gevaert 8E75 HD emulsions by a physical development.

The main goal of this study was to improve the bandwidth of reflection holograms which is about 70 nm with a classical chemical developer. A series of simple Denisyuk holograms were systematically analysed by diffuse reflectance spectroscopy using an integrating sphere. By changing the conditions of the physical development, the bandwidth and the maximum wavelength of the reflection spectra were easily adjusted.

The parameters influencing the efficiency of the developer were optimized by measuring not only the reflection spectra but also the output modulation of sinusoidal reflection gratings. By comparison with a classical chemical development we obtained a 20% improvement of output modulation.
