Summary
A total of 132 male and female children were selected from each of two grade levels, kindergarten and fourth grade, to serve as Ss in an experiment which investigated the effects of cognitive development and need states on altruistic behavior. They were rewarded for playing a game and subsequently were given an opportunity to share their earnings. The number of units donated was analyzed by employing a 2 × 3 x 2 ANOVA. A significant interaction was obtained on the general need by specific need interaction, F(2, 120) = 3.30, p < .05.
