Abstract
This study examined the developmental effects of continuous white noise stimulation on arousal level, as indexed by heart rate and state. Subjects were 1-month old babies (n = 30), 8- and 10-year-old boys (eight each), adult males (n = 16), and elderly males (n = 16). As predicted, the continuous stimulation effect, substantial for infants, decreased with age. The anticipated reappearance in elderly subjects did not occur.
