Goal Setting as Impression Management

&
Pages 33-36 | Received 06 Feb 1984, Published online: 02 Jul 2010

Summary

It was hypothesized that S s working in the presence of an observer (n = 25) would set higher goals than would S s working alone (n = 32) and that there would be a significant goal-performance relationship for S s working alone but not for S s observed. The results of a task-performance exercise supported both hypotheses. Average performance did not differ across conditions.
