Abstract
The beta distribution is used as a model for obtaining sampling plans when material is in bulk form and the random variable is the fraction of material having a given characteristic. The model seems to be particularly appropriate when observations are close to either zero or one, a situation in which the normal may not provide a good fit. A practical example is cited using the proportion of coarse (or fine) material in refractory cement.
