Implementing Synthetic Control Charts

Abstract

We present a program in C, SYNTH, which can be used to design a synthetic control chart that minimizes the out-of-control average run length (ARL). The synthetic chart, an integration of the Shewhart and the conforming run length charts, detects shifts in the process mean, δ, but produces smaller out-of-control ARL's than the Shewhart chart and outperforms the exponentially weighted moving average (EWMA) chart when δ is approximately greater than 0.8σ.
