Abstract

A popular misconception often places the blame for syphilis on the American Indian. In truth, no one race or subspecies of Man is responsible for this venereal malady. Syphilis has been a part of Man's cultural heritage and physical past since early prehistoric times but scientists are just beginning to realize the past record of the disease. Three theories are discussed.
