Development of a scale to measure attitude toward the condom as a method of birth control

Pages 255-263 | Accepted 30 Nov 1983, Published online: 11 Jan 2010

Abstract

The Attitude Toward Condoms Scale (ATC) was developed as an assessment instrument for use in research directed toward promotion of barrier methods of contraception. The resulting 40‐item, Likert‐type scale was found to have an internal consistency reliability coefficient of .93, with an average inter‐item correlation of .24. It is comprised of five major factors, accounting for 45% of the total variance. The scale has been shown to be sensitive to a positive attitude change manipulation, giving some evidence of its construct validity.
