The 50th anniversary of Kinsey's Sexual Behavior in the Human Male provides an opportunity for a reexamination of Kinsey's methodology. I start with a discussion of Kinsey's approach to science and move on to his research question, his sampling method, and the composition of the sample. Next, I address questionnaire design, interviewer training, and interviewing, allowing for a comparison of Kinsey's methodology with more conventional approaches. I confine the discussion of data reduction and analysis to issues of gender and sexual identity, as these provide good illustrations of Kinsey's approach. Finally, I address Kinsey's long‐term influence.
