Assessment in Early Childhood Education

Abstract

A critical component of effective teaching is the assessment of the skills and understanding that children have and the follow-up of these evaluations with teaching to facilitate learning outcomes and the development of each individual. Issues relating to evaluation discussed include multi-dimensional assessment, portfolio assessment, the testing of very young children, standardizing testing, grading and report cards. The article concludes with a current view of the appropriate role of assessment in early childhood education.
