ABSTRACT
Forestdale Black-on-red was named as a ceramic type in 1953 by Wendorf on the basis of two vessels. Based on these vessels and an additional 11 bowls and three sherds in the Arizona State Museum, a formal description of the type is presented along with a discussion of its chronological position and relationships to other types. Forestdale Black-on-red may be the earliest locally made decorated pottery in the Forestdale area and represents another example of the close interrelationships among painted, plain ware, and redware pottery types within the Mogollon ceramic tradition.
