From Discovery to Explanation: The History of Gallina Archaeology

Abstract

This article explores the history of Gallina Phase archaeology including the trajectory of discovery, archaeological research, intellectual thought, and cultural resource management. Discovery and description of sites in the Gallina culture area first occurred in the late 1800s followed by a period of definition and exploration of the characteristics of the Gallina Phase during the first half of the twentieth century. Scientific investigation and explanation of cultural process started between 1950 and 1970. Active management of cultural resources including inventory and excavation by Federal agencies in the Gallina area began in the 1970s. In the twenty-first century new interpretation of the Gallina Phase has evolved through diverse inquiries into this distinct culture. Current investigations include chronology, social violence, household archaeology, ceramic studies, migration routes, settlement patterns, and group identity, and are creating a more holistic portrait of Gallina lifeways.

Este artículo explora la historia de la arqueología de la Fase Gallina incluyendo la trayectoria del descubrimiento, la investigación arqueológica, el pensamiento intelectual y la gestión de los recursos culturales. El descubrimiento y la descripción de los sitios en el área de la cultura de Gallina primero ocurrieron en los últimos 1800s seguidos por un período de definición y exploración de las características de la fase de Gallina durante la primera mitad del siglo XX. La investigación científica y la explicación del proceso cultural comenzaron entre 1950 y 1970. El manejo activo de recursos culturales incluyendo el inventario y la excavación por las agencias federales en el área de Gallina comenzó en los años 70. En el siglo XXI, nuevas interpretaciones de la Fase Gallina han evolucionado a través de diversas preguntas sobre esta cultura distinta. Las investigaciones actuales incluyen cronología, violencia social, arqueología doméstica, estudios de cerámica, rutas de migración, patrones de asentamiento e identidad de grupo, y están creando un retrato más holístico de la vida Gallina.
