Abstract
The optical and dc pulsed field Kerr effects have been measured in 5 OCB in the isotropic phase and in dilute solution. The pretransitional behaviour has been examined in terms of the Landau-de Gennes model. The constants of this formalism have been given and a possible optical shutter has been suggested.
