Abstract

The synthesis of five new mesogenic derivatives of 1 (Y = n-octyloxy) is reported. The most striking feature of these compounds is their ability to tolerate a variety of Z substituents (including non-linear, large or polar groups) without losing their mesomorphic properties. For the first time, a compound exhibiting two mesophases (Ch and Sc∗) with inverse sense of twist is described. (Some virtual transitions have been determined by the observation of liquid cristalline droplets)
