Abstract

In this paper we calculate the internal field constants γe of four homologs in the nematic and crystalline phase, and found that in the nematic phase the ye ∼ S2 curve isnearlya straight line for each compound. When oneextrapolates the straight line to S2 = 1 the corresponding γe value is nearly equal to γ, which is the crystalline internal field constant γ. The birefringence data for the four compounds:

(1) p(p-ethoxyphenylazo) phenyl valerate.

(2) p(p-ethoxyphenylazo) phenyl hexanoate,

(3) p(p-ethoxyphenylazo) phenyl heptanoate,

(4) p(p-ethoxyphenylazo) phenyl undecylenate,

were taken from those reported by Sornashekar el al.1
