Abstract
The fractional volume changes at the nematic isotropic transitions in binary mixtures of p-azoxyanisole (PAA) and 4,4'-di-n-hexyloxyazoxybenzene (PHAB) are reported. It is observed that the fractional volume change-composition curve exhibits a depression similar to that seen in the phase boundary of this system. The behavior of the fractional volume change is explained in terms of the binary mesophase mixture theory of Humphries, James and Luckhurst which was able to explain the shape of the phase boundary of the PAA/PHAB system.
