Abstract
Starting with a model intermolecular potential that includese terms (to account for anisotropic steric interactions) a statistical mechanical calculation of the surface tension at the free surface of a nematic liquid crystal is carried out. The effect of the transition zone on the surface tension is examined. The expressions for surface tension are obtained from the extended Fowler-Kirkwood-Buff formulas for the cases of linear, cubic and exponential density profiles.
