Abstract
Ternary phase diagrams for the system Poly (γ-benzl-α, L-glutamate)/Nylon-6/m-cresol, were determined by optical microscopy at room temperature, for several different molecular weights, The pahse diagrams do not closely resemble those predicated form the athermal theory for rod/random, coil/diluent mixtures, as set forth by Flory. The appearance of a biphasic system occurs at lower concentrations than predicted. It is proposed that this phenomenon might be caused by the different hydrogen bonding characteristeics of the two polymers. The utility of epiflousecene microscopy as a supplement to the usual corssed-polars techniques for structural determiantions is discussed.
