A new series of invited review articles

Page 2433 | Published online: 19 Dec 2009

This issue of Molecular Physics features the first in a new series of invited review articles, ‘Good Vibrations: Probing Biomolecular Structure and Interactions through Spectroscopy in the Gas Phase’, by John Simons. This new departure for the journal follows the successful publication of a collection of reviews Citation1 covering some of the most important areas of interest to the journal's readership to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Molecular Physics.

John Simons’ article in this issue features biomolecular spectroscopy, particularly vibrational spectroscopy, and focuses on the relevance of such gas phase studies to real biological problems.

Molecular Physics has published many research papers in this area, including a number of papers in the special issue dedicated to John Simons himself in 2005 Citation2, and more recently on widely varying aspects of biomolecule studies including photoionization of amino acids Citation3, conformational studies of threonine Citation4, matrix peptide interactions in MALDI mass spectroscopy Citation5, vibrational spectroscopy of nickel metalloporhyrins Citation6, spectroscopic characterization of photosystem I at the single-molecule level Citation7, the nature of base stacking in associates of the adenine and thymine DNA bases Citation8, ab initio multiple spawning dynamics of excited state intramolecular proton transfer and the role of spectroscopically dark states Citation9, DFT and TDDFT studies of structure, spectra and hyperpolarisabilities of ‘push-pull’ zinc porphyrins Citation10.

The publication of specially invited review articles in this new series is designed to enable Molecular Physics to apply a directed and illuminating focus on particular areas of research that fall within its remit. Forthcoming articles will include reviews written by leading authors on areas such as quantum and semiclassical dynamics, relativistic quantum chemistry, ultracold molecules (see also Citation11), inelastic collisions, density functional theory, and single-molecule Raman spectroscopy.

The Editors would welcome new research article submissions in these areas, as well as articles related to John Simons’ review in the present issue, and will publicise such articles and other recently published related papers in conjunction with the review articles. Through the collection and presentation of stand-alone papers, which may be either directly or obliquely linked to each other, we aim to further develop understanding of these areas in general.
