Excitation spectrum of neutral molecules adsorbed on metal surfaces

Pages 1565-1575 | Received 01 Mar 1978, Published online: 23 Aug 2006

Abstract

We have investigated the excitation spectrum of neutral atoms adsorbed on metal surfaces. The excitation spectrum is found to consist of two symmetric and two anti-symmetric energy modes whose spectral functions are described by asymmetric lorentzian lines. Detailed expressions are derived for the energies of excitation and the corresponding spectral widths. Numerical results are obtained for rare-gas atoms adsorbed on metal surfaces.
