Abstract
An equation is derived which relates the dielectric kernel and its functional derivative with respect to the density. Possible methods of solution of the equation are discussed. It is shown how the method can be used to obtain the partial derivative, (∂ ∈/∂n), which appears in the Einstein-Smoluchowski theory of light scattering. A sample calculation is given which suggests a new expression for (∂∈/∂n), and, thus, for the ‘local field factor’ in light scattering.
