Energy distribution function for the NVT canonical ensemble

Abstract

Two functional forms for the density probability function for the NVT ensemble system energy, g(E), are examined. These two functions are the gaussian distribution and the gamma distribution. The equation that permits us to introduce the parameter of deviation from the gaussian distribution is derived. The temperature and density dependence of the parameter is calculated for argon. It is shown that the gamma distribution provides reasonable values of the entropy but cannot provide the temperature dependence of the heat capacity.
