Bounded capillary fluctuations: the constraint of self-gravity

Abstract

In the absence of external fields, the amplitude of capillary wave fluctuations diverges as the surface area of the fluid increases. We show that this divergence is eliminated by the inclusion of the fluid's self-gravitation. On spherical samples the maximum amplitude of the capillary waves occurs for radii of a few meters.
