We derive a density functional theory appropriate for hard wall problems. This formalism and the familiar square gradient theory are tested in the case of the two dimensional, one component plasma. Comparisons with exact (analytic and Monte Carlo) results show that both theories are reasonably accurate for not too strong coupling.
