On the mean spherical model for liquid crystals

Abstract

The mean spherical model for liquid crystals is proposed. In the special case when the intermolecular potential has a Yukawa form the analytical solution is possible and the model exhibits instability towards the formation of an orientationally ordered phase. In the mean field limit the Maier-Saupe bifurcation point is produced.
