Abstract
We have extended the original formulation, given by Wentzel, for the number of bound states in a two-body potential well, to obtain an exact expression for the relative density of states. Using this expression, in the case of hard spheres, we have obtained the first three terms in an asymptotic expansion, valid at high energies and suitable for the calculation of the second virial coefficient at high temperatures.
