ON THE PRESENCE AND FUNCTION OF POST-CLOACAL BONES IN THE LACERTILIA

Pages 7-13 | Received 18 Sep 1975, Published online: 12 Jul 2013

SUMMARY

The distribution and mode of reduction of post-cloacal bones among Gekkonidae, Pygopodidae and Xantusiidae are discussed. The presence of the bones in Tanystropheus longobardicus (Bassani, 1886) from the Middle Triassic of Central Europe is suggested.

The study of muscle-attachments on the post-cloacal bones provides anatomical evidence for GREENBERG'S (1943) interpretation of their function as anal spurs by male geckos during copulation.
