A SURVEY OF THE ULTRASTRUCTURE OF THE OUTER SURFACE OF THE EGG SHELLS IN BIRDS

Pages 25-91 | Received 15 Dec 1975, Published online: 12 Jul 2013

SUMMARY

This paper presents a panoramic survey of the ultrastructure of the outer surface of the eggshells of Birds. Scanning electron microscopy has revealed, in the different species, characteristic patterns of cuticle texture, thickness and porosity and of pore-canals density in the subjacent layer. The patterns appear to be related to the amount of gaseous and fluid exchange through the eggshell, and seem to be somewhat constant in the major systematic groups, many of them recognizable by the sub-microscopic pattern of the egg surface.
