SUMMARY

1.

Thirty-five cultures of yeasts were isolated from shrimp (Peneaus setiferus) collected in the Gulf of Mexico off the Coast of Texas.

2.

Eleven of the cultures were members of the genus Rhodotorula, 9 of Trichosporon, 3 of Torulopsis, 4 of Pullularia, 6 of Candida and 2 of Hansenula.

3.

Five new species and one new variety were described: Trichosporon diddensii, Rhodotorula peneaus, R. texensis, R. marina, Trichosporon lodderi, and Trichosporon cutaneum var. peneaus.

4.

Salt tolerance of the isolates was determined by growth on wort agar with added sodium chloride. Appreciable differences in salt tolerance were noted.

5.

The range of temperatures permitting growth for the various isolates was determined by incubating wort agar slants at the various temperatures for different periods of time. There were considerable differences in temperaure tolerances for growth between the different isolates. The color of certain cultures of Rhodotorula varied considerably with temperature of incubation.
