Myrothecium Striatisporum: Its Occurrence in Arkansas Soil and its Cellulolytic Activity

&
Pages 786-789 | Published online: 12 Sep 2018

SUMMARY

Five isolates of Myrothecium striatisporum were recovered from soil from crop-rotation plots at Nodena, Arkansas. So far as we know this is the first record of occurrence of this species in the United States. The fungus was tested for cellulolytic activity by determining its ability to cause strength loss in cotton fabric. All the isolates proved to be effective cellulose decomposers and 2 of them were almost as active in this respect as M. verrucaria, reputedly the most strongly cellulolytic fungus known.
