SUMMARY
The type specimens of the 17 species of Merulius proposed by Burt are redescribed and 11 of them illustrated. Ten names were considered synonyms of existing species of Merulius, Poria or Serpula. Disposition of the 12 species with hyaline spores is: M. albus, a synonym of Poria cocos (Schw.) Wolf; M. cubensis and M. hirsutus as synonyms of M. corium (Fries) Fries; M. dubius, a synonym of P. sanguinolenta (Fries) Cke.; M. farlowii, a synonym of M. serpens Fries; M. gyrosus, a synonym of M. borealis Rom.; M. hirtellus is a distinct species allied with M. bellus Berk. & Curt.; M. lichenicola, a synonym of P. mollusca (Fries) Cke.; M. pilosus, a synonym of M. rufus Fries; M. sororius is a distinct species of uncertain generic position; M. sulphureus is a Poria (near P. cocos); M. tomentosus, is probably a Poria (near P. monticola Murr.). The S species with pigmented spores were delegated: M. americanus, a synonym of Serpula himantioides (Fries) Bond, ex Parm.; M. atrovirens, a synonym of S. pinastri (Fries) W. B. Cooke; M. byssoideus is S. byssoidea (Burt) W. B. Cooke; M. hexagonoides and M. montanus are distinct species of uncertain generic position.
