Studies on the Sexuality of Nannizzia. II. Morphogenesis of Gametangia in N. Incurvata

Pages 593-605 | Accepted 15 May 1969, Published online: 12 Sep 2018

SUMMARY

Morphogenesis of gametangia in Nannizzia incurvata has been studied. Sex organs were not observed in single mating type cultures and were found to be produced only when mycelia of two compatible strains came to close proximity. The club-shaped antheridia arose from thin hyphal branches while the ascogonia were produced from wide hyphae. The ascogonia coiled clockwise around the antheridia 6–8 times. The coiling process was found to be disturbed under intensive light.

Antheridium-like and cleistothecium-like structures were induced in single mating type cultures treated with culture filtrates of opposite mating type or mated cultures. The peridial hyphae from the cleistothecium-like structures differed considerably from those produced in normal cleistothecia.
