SUMMARY

Helminthosporium oryzae Breda de Haan can produce anthraquinone pigments under a wide range of cultural conditions. Nutrition affects the amount of pigment formed, minimal media such as Czapek-Dox producing a higher per cent of pigment per gram of growth (dry wt basis) than similar media to which complex substances such as casein, peptone, and corn steep liquor have been supplied. Cynodontin (1,4,5,8-tetrahydroxy-2- methylanthraquinone) has been identified as one of three pigments produced by this species. The two other pigments have been partially characterized: one as a trihydroxy-methyl, the other as a dihydroxy-methyl anthraquinone.
