SUMMARY
The fungus attacking conifer seedlings in the Lake States region, previously identified as Cylindrocladium scoparium Morgan, is morphologically distinct from this species, but is morphologically indistinguishable from C. floridanum Sob. & Seymour and is considered to be the latter species. The primary morphological characteristic separating these species is the shape of the vesicle. Vesicles of C. scoparium are oval to ellipsoid, whereas those of C. floridanum are globose to obovate. The phialides of C. floridanum are doliform, compared with doliform to oval phialides for C. scoparium. Small, lateral vesiculate stipes from secondary conidiophores were found in all isolates of C. floridanum, but in none of three isolates of C. scoparium.
