Thindia, a New Genus of the Sarcoscyphineae (Pezizales)

SUMMARY

A new species, Thindia cupressi, occurring on the dead foliage of Cupressus in India, is the basis of a monotypic new genus of the operculate discomycetes. The yellow-orange to orange apothecia are provided with brown setae and resemble those of Scutellinia or Cheilymenia (Pezizineae), but microanatomical and cytological characters show that this 4- spored fungus belongs instead to the Sarcoscyphineae. Possible relationships to Pithya and Pseudopithyella (Sarcoscypheae) and to Desmazierella (Sarcosomateae) are noted.
