Supportive Evidence for Postcleavage Meiosis in Physarum Flavicomum

SUMMARY

A statistically valid experimental method was developed to determine the numerical relationship between the number of nuclei in young developing sporangia and the number of spores ultimately produced in mature sporangia. Twice as many spores are produced as there are nuclei in young sporangia indicating that meiosis does not occur before spore cleavage. Alterations in the normal fruiting rhythms had no effect on the numerical relationship observed.
