Budding in the Dimorphic Fungus Cladosporium Werneckii

SUMMARY

The process of daughter bud formation by the yeastlike cells of Cladosporium werneckii has been studied with light and electron microscopy. Daughter buds are typically produced by the generative apex of a polarized mother cell. Successive daughter buds develop through the bud scar left by the previous bud. This type of successive bud production results in the formation of distinct collars around the generative apex of the mother cell. The budding pattern exhibited by the yeastlike phase of C. werneckii is similar in many respects to the apiculate budding pattern exhibited by the true yeast Saccharomycodes ludwigii. The collars formed on the generative apex of the mother cell resemble the annellations found on the annellophores of certain Hyphomycetes.
