ABSTRACT

A new species of the protostelid genus Schizoplasmodiopsis, S. amoeboidea, is distinguished from the four previously described species by its amoeboid trophic stage that does not develop into a Plasmodium. Also, its spores, though not self-expulsive, can be readily detached and dispersed by air currents. New information on stalk development in this and the type species is presented. The new species has been found in the Cook Islands, Hawaii, and North Carolina.
