ABSTRACT

Environmental test chambers are used for determining the resistance of military equipment to the effects of fungal growth. In this survey, we have determined the nature of the organisms in the atmosphere of our chamber to see how they compare with the mixtures of organisms required as inocula for mildew-resistance testing of military equipment. From our experiments, we have found representatives of all but one of the species of fungi required as inocula in chamber specification testing, plus representatives of many species found in the natural environment. Comparison of organisms indigenous to our chamber with those isolated by various investigators from materials exposed in natural environments, indicates that materials in our chamber will be exposed to a range of organisms representative of those found in natural environments.
